Rental of Paisley Abbey, written between 1460 and 1550.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.15.1.17

Scope and Contents

Manuscript rental book for Paisley Abbey, written in Scotland, containing statistical information and a series of individual rentals from the period 1460 to 1550, with a later marginal addition of 1555.

The record is sporadically kept. Farnhill observes that the earliest extant rentals were drawn up in 1460. The next sets of rentals date from 1472 and 1484. Subsequently there are rentals which cover the years 1519 to 1522, and then a final completed rental from 1525. Towards the end of the volume an attempt was made to begin a new rental in 1550. The properties and headings were drawn up for this but no information inserted. The previous rental remained in use until at least 1555. For a more in-depth discussion of the contents of the rentals see Farnhill.

There are many hands evident throughout the manuscript. Some of the headings are written in a bookhand; however, the rest of the work is written cursive hands, at times difficult to read. There are also many alterations and deletions as rentals were updated, and occasionally entire paragraphs are deleted. Pen trials are occasionally evident in the margins or on otherwise blank folios.

Lining for margins is visible on the first 16 folios, but appears to stop after that.

There is a set of foliation, probably done in the early 19th century, which is inconsistent. This has been superseded by a modern library foliation in the upper right corner of each recto side.

The volume contains no decoration; however, on folio 110v is a contemporary plain pen drawing of a head.

Custodial History

The manuscript would appear to have been in use at the Abbey of Paisley until the mid 16th century.

The volume then belonged to Rev. Dr Robert Boog (d. 1823), minister of the Abbey Church, Paisley. On folio 156v of Adv.MS.26.3.4 there is an excerpt from the Register and a note which reads 'formerly belonging to Dr Bogue of Paisley, but now to the Advocates Library'.

The manuscript was acquired by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates at the sale of Dr Boog's manuscripts in 1824.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.

Physical Description

Paper.

The binding is of 19th-century brown morocco leather. The three outer edges of the boards are tooled in gold. The centre of each board features a gold-tooled design of a floral medallion, with lettering within which reads 'ADVOCATORUM BIBLIOTHECA', surrounding a face within rays. The spine has five raised bands, as well as a gold-tooled shelfmark and title which reads: 'RENTAL OF PAISLEY ABBEY'.

The modern paper endleaves of the volume bear a watermark which reads 'A. Cowan 1838' and a fleur-de-lis atop a heraldic shield. The paper of the manuscript itself has a watermark of a bell, similar to Briquet number 3984 (Udine, 1435).

The volume was probably rebound some time after its acquisition by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates in 1824, as the sale catalogue lists it as being in its original binding.
