Scope and Contents

Late 13th-century manuscript containing the seven books of the 'Compendium theologicae veritatis' of Hugh Ripelin of Strasbourg. The manuscript is written in littera textualis with 26 to 29 lines to a page.

The 'Compendium' is believed to have been compiled by Hugh towards the end of his life, from circa 1260 onwards. The work is divided in to seven books: I The Nature of God; II The Creation; III On Sin; IV The Incarnation; V On Grace, the Virtues, the Beatitudes and the Ten Commandments; VI The Sacraments; VII The Last Things.

The contents of the volume are as follows:

Table of contents for the seven books of the 'Compendium'. Folios 1r-3r.

Folio 3v is blank.

Table of contents in a later hand, incomplete. Folio 199v.

Flyleaves from a liturgical manuscript. Folios 200r-201v.

There is a short poem, in a later hand and in English, in the lower margin of folio 199v which possibly reads: 'Euen it es a richȝ ture wele bies im þat itte may win of Mirthes ma þan ert may think and þa iois sal neuer blin. Sinful man, bot þu þe mend and for-sak þin wikkid sin þu mon singge hay wailaway for comes þu neuer mare þar-I[nne]'.

In the contents table to the front each capital is stroked with red and Arabic numeration is given in red.

Each book is decorated with a large penflourished initial, either red or blue with filigree tracery which extends into the margin in saw patterns. Each new chapter within the books has a smaller penflourished initial, either red or blue with filigree tracery which extends into the margin. Paraphs are in red and blue alternately. There are frequent maniculae. A later addition is a running header in the top margin of the number of each book in Arabic numerals. Each new chapter within a book is occasionally highlighted in the margin by an Arabic numeral.

There are some erasures and corrections visible throughout, as well as contemporary and modern repairs to the vellum.

In addition to the central text there are some interlineal and marginal textual annotations throughout, mostly scribal or near-contemporary, but occasionally in later hands.

Each folio recto and verso has been lined and ruled.

Pricking is occasionally visible for the horizontal lines.

Horizontal catchwords are present on the following folios: 15v, 31v (cropped), 47v, 63v, 79v, 95v, 111v, 135v, 151v (cropped), 167v, 183v (cropped).
