Chartulary of Paisley Abbey, 16th century, containing material covering the years 1163-1530.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.34.4.14

Scope and Contents

Chartulary produced in Scotland containing documents and charters concerning Paisley Abbey. The contents are arranged according to subject matter, and in part topographically. The volume includes copies of royal, papal and episcopal charters, with a contemporary table of contents at the front.

Davis has dated the manuscript to the 1520s. Scott suggests that part of the manuscript may have been started around 1505, but that the presence of a group of texts dated to 1522 supports the theory that the date of compilation was the mid- to late 1520s.

The manuscript appears to be the work of one scribe and is written in a neat charter hand with 28 lines to a page.

Folios 1r-3v are blank except for ownership inscription and pentrials.

Folios 4r-12v contain the contemporary table of contents.

Folio 13 is blank, recto and verso, but is lined and ruled.

Folios 14r-15v contain writing trials of three charters.

The chartulary proper starts on folio 16r and runs continually to folio 288r.

Folios 288v-289v are blank, recto and verso, but are lined and ruled.

Scott notes that the scribe has copied in the notarial signatures of ten Scottish notaries from various dates between 1384 and 1522. For further discussion on the copying of the documents see Scott (2000).

The decoration of the manuscripts consists of rubrics in red and plain pen-flourished intials. This continues until folio 22v after which the rubrics are given in black.

Each folio recto and verso has been ruled within a frame. Pricking is occasionally evident for the horizontal lines.

From folios 16r to 285r there is a scribal foliation in Roman numerals which runs i-cclxxi. This has been superseded by modern foliation in the top right corner.

There are some scribal marginal annotations, but these are seldom.

Arrangement

289 folios, as well as 2 modern paper flyleaves to the front and 2 modern paper flyleaves to the rear.

Due to the nature of the modern binding and repairs it is not always apparent where the gatherings are. It would appear that there are possibly 10 leaves to a gathering.

The evidence of the writing trials suggests that the leaves were already folded when the writing was done.

Custodial History

The volume was probably made for the use of Paisley Abbey in the 1520s.

It was then in the possession of the Cochrane family, Earls of Dundonald. It was borrowed from the family at some point before 1710 by George Crawford to complete his 'Scots Peerage'.

The volume was next in the possession of Richard Augustine Hay, who made a transcript, and was bought from him by the Advocates Library, probably in December 1731.

There are ownership inscriptions for the library of the Faculty of Advocates on folios 1r and 4r.

The previous shelfmark assigned to the volume by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates, now superseded, is given on folio 1r: 'Jac.V.6.15', the 15 has been scored through to now read: 'Jac.V.6.16'.

Physical Description

Paper.

The binding is possibly of the 17th century, and is rough leather with blind-tooled borders on the front and back boards. The volume has been rebacked and repaired, possibly in 1960. Many of the folios have been repaired and mounted on guards. The new back has raised bands and a smooth leather panel with gold-tooled title which reads: 'PAISLEY'. There is also a gold-tooled library stamp and shelfmark.

The paper of the manuscript is watermarked, probably with the design of a shell, but the markings are obscured due to their position in the gutter margin. The watermark does not appear in Briquet.
