Early 16th-century transcript of selected parts of the chartulary of Lindores Abbey.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.34.7.1

Scope and Contents

Chartulary produced in Scotland containing copies of royal, papal, episcopal, and other charters, as well as some grants of the abbey of Lindores.

The work is written in a small cursive hand and was probably written in the early 16th century. According to Davis it certainly dates from after 1502. Dickson also suggests that the manuscript may have been written as late as the reign of James IV (d. 1513).

The work contains 25 documents concerning the abbey of Lindores and its burgh, ranging in date from the end of the twelfth century to the beginning of the sixteenth, with later additions of inventories at the end of the volume dated 1530. It is unclear why these particular documents were selected for inclusion in the present work. The transcripts appear to be mainly concerned with the possessions and rights of the abbey in its own immediate neighbourhood.

The manuscript does not contain the foundation charter. This can be found with other charters of the abbey in Adv.MS.15.1.8.

There is evidence of ruling on the original paper leaves, but some of the ruling has been lost due to trimming during the process of rebinding and mounting.

Each new charter entry beings with a plain penwork initial, some more elaborate than others.

The list of charters is as follows:

Physical Description

Paper.

The original paper leaves have been cut, and then mounted and framed on paper, probably in the 19th century.

19th-century red morocco binding with marbled endpapers and gilt edges. The front and back covers have borders tooled in gold. The three edges of the boards and the turn-ins are also tooled in gold. The spine has gold-tooled flower terminals and a gold-tooled title which reads: 'LIBER S. MARIAE DE LINDORES'. There is a remnant of a library sticker on the tail end.

The original paper of the manuscript is watermarked with a crown (visible on folios 2, 4, and 16), and a heraldic shield quartered with a fleur-de-lis and possibly a dolphin (visible on folios 1 and 7). This watermark is similar to Briquet number 1655 (Rouen, 1477).
