Folios 1-8 (first layer):

In this part of the manuscript, the main text-hand, is an attractive one with elliptical curves, also appearing at Adv.MS.72.1.26, folio 7 recto, where it alludes to a Mac Maol-tuile, and at Adv.MS.72.1.10, folios 2 recto, 2 verso, 3 recto, and 5 verso, where it emends a copy of book 1 of the present tract. This suggests an origin in east Connacht. A less remarkable hand begins the layer (to folio 1 recto, column b, line 5) and ends it (from folio 8 verso, column a, line 12), adding above a comment on the script (?‘...maith an litir...so this’). Folio 8 verso bears some other marks as well. There is little decoration, and no colouring.

(i) On Aphorisms of Hippocrates, cf. Adv.MS.72.1.10, folio 1 recto, column a, line 37. Beginning (acephalous) ‘tarta ⁊ renell geal a n-ichtar in fuail’ = Adv.MS.72.1.13, folio 26 recto, column a, line 10. First complete section begins ‘Estive quartane ut multum fiunt breves’. Ends ‘⁊ is deacra na sin isna seanoiribh’ = folio 12 verso, column a, line 41 = Adv.MS.72.1.13, folio 28 verso, column b, 3rd last line, i.e. end of section beginning ‘Branci et corrise in valde senibus non manturuntur’. Folios 9-16 (second layer):

In this part of the manuscript, the text is written by a single hand, clear and functional. Occasional capitals are carefully coloured red. At folio 10 recto another hand writes ‘Prult .i. aibluig[adh] mor .i. medhughadh...’ The large hand of Adv.MS.72.1.10, folio 6 verso, and Adv.MS.84.1.18, folios 2 verso and 5 recto, inscribes some letters in lower margins of folio 11 recto (trimmed) and 12 recto; it seems also to have been responsible for inserting some capitals where the text-hand left space for a decorated initial. Finally, at folio 12 verso, upper margin, Fearghus Ó Fearghail writes ‘...Muiri ingheine doing(?) snathadh ar gach ngalar ar an tes lus acend agcenn gach gab[haidh] a talamh. Misi Ferghus qui sgribsit’.

(ii) On Aphorisms of Hippocrates, cf. Adv.MS.72.1.10, folio 1 recto, column a, line 37. Beginning (acephalous) ‘Et adeir G[alien] isin gluais so’ = folio 3 recto, column b, 3rd last line. First complete section beginning ‘(N)on secundum recionem aleviatis non oportet credere’. Ends incomplete ‘An tan bes an dat luaigi sig[nigid] tigearnas’, in section beginning ‘Quando estas sit veri similis’. Represents book 2, number 26-book 3, number 6.
