Manuscript in Gaelic containing medical, religious, and mythological texts.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.72.1.26

Scope and Contents

Consists of two distinct manuscripts: (a) folios 1-4, 11, containing chiefly a collection of mirabilia, and (b) folios 5-10, a medical remnant possibly of east Connacht origin (see folios 7 recto, 9 verso).

The manuscript is written in the following hands:

1. Text, folios 1-4, 11. A hand with curved strokes and distinctive ‘g’.

2. Text, folio 4 verso, column b, lines 36-42. Neat.

3. Text, folios 5-10. Strongly seriffed, slightly crabbed. Includes the only substantial decoration in the manuscript, an ornamental initial at folio 10 verso with some purple colouring.

4. Folios 5 recto, 6 recto. Similar to text-hand of Adv.MS.72.1.10.

5. Folio 7 recto. An emendator of Adv.MS.72.1.10, folios 2-5. Refers here to a member of the east Connacht medical family of Ó (Mac) Maol-Tuile.

6. Folios 5-10. Hand 8 of Adv.MS.72.1.27. Writes (folio 9 verso) near Balintubber, district of Corca Eachlann, County Roscommon, referring to Eachann.

Conditions Governing Use

Extent

11 Leaves ; Quarto. (a) folios 1-4, 11: 24 x 18 centimetres and under. (b) folios 5-10: 23 x 16.5 centimetres.

Language of Materials

Gaelic; Scottish Gaelic

Arrangement

11 folios. (The foliation is modern.)

Folios 1 and 11 are conjugate, while the conjunct of folio 2 is excised. Folios 5-10 (a gathering) were stitched by thongs, of which only one remains secured, into what is now the middle of folios 1-2, 11. Folios 3-4, a bifolium, are loose but seem to belong after folio 2, suggesting that (probably for textual continuity) gathering (b) was bound into gathering (a) at a point after the middle. In two columns, except folio 11, where an Ossianic lay is written continuously across the page.

Custodial History

Formerly Gaelic MS.XXVI.

As hand 8 is the only one common to both portions, it seems not unlikely (as in the case of Adv.MS.72.1.1 and others) that the manuscript was assembled and brought to Scotland by an Ó Fearghail.

The manuscript is Kilbride number 12 by Major MacLachlan’s enumeration (‘12th partly Religious & partly Medical’, folio 1 recto, visible under ultra violet light), and number 22 by Hugh Kerr’s, whose name or initials appear on every leaf.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.

Physical Description

Vellum.

The manuscript is in a poor condition. It is stained and soiled throughout; folios 1 recto, 11 verso illegible through friction; slight textual losses elsewhere. Folio 1 is partly perished, folio 2 crushed. Folios 3-4 came adrift after being studied by Kuno Meyer, and are not catalogued by Donald Mackinnon; it appears from an accompanying note by M R Dobie, Keeper of Manuscripts, that they were found in 1938 in Adv.MS.72.1.7. They still bear binding threads.
