Notebook of a mid-19th century Lady containing knitting and crochet patterns, and Gaelic poetry.

Scope and Contents

The notebook, watermarked 1833, is anonymously written from both ends. End ‘A’, paginated 1-121, consists of knitting and crochet patterns based on Gaugain, ‘The knitter’s friend’. Includes ‘The McDonald pattern’ (page 113).

End ‘B’ is paginated 1-63, but pages 9-34 have been cut out. Pages 1-55 are in the same hand as end ‘A’, and are catalogued below. Pages 56-63 are in a later hand and contain knitting patterns and recipes.

The contents are as follows.

(i) Flora MacDonald. “Tha rùn mo crì dhuit Thearlich oig”, 2 quatrains + chorus. ‘Shuibhail a Ri’ (page 1);

(ii) ‘Thearlaich oig a laoidh mo cheile’, 5 quatrains (middle of page 2);

(iii) ‘Cha till cha till cha till mi tuille’, 7 quatrains. MacCrimmon’s Farewell and Lament (page 4);

(Pages 9-34) missing.

(xii) James Montgomery. What bird in beauty flight or song, 44 lines. “On the anniversary of Robert Burns’ birthday”. Continued at page 54 (middle of page 47);

(xiii) ‘Directions for preserving Sea-weeds’ (page 48).
