Medical manuscript in Gaelic containing Isidore’s commentary on the Aphorisms of Johannes Damascenus (Mesue).
Scope and Contents
The text of the manuscript is written in a bold slightly angular hand and is generally above average size. The only marginalium, ‘Amo Deus, bene literat, amen dico vobis’ (folio 1 verso) may be by the same hand although in a different ink. Capitals are coloured in red. The contents are as follows. On Isidore’s commentary on Aphorisms of Johannes Damascenus (Mesue), cf. Adv.MS.72.1.13, folio 1 recto, column a, line 1. Beginning (acephalous) ‘ata an triacla do beith uair and’ = Adv.MS.72.1.23, folio 2 recto, column a, line 22. First complete section begins ‘Morbi exteriores vere e aestate’. Ends ‘Item adeir Isidurus gurub tarbaidhe’ in section beginning ‘Quibus in iuventute quater in ando’. Relates to Mesue’s printed text (1514 edition) folios 31 verso, column a, line 18-32 verso, column a, line 19. This portion of the tract is also covered in parts by Adv.MS.72.1.23 and 72.1.17. 8 folios. The foliation is modern. Single gathering bound by thongs, the largest of which bears script (‘an so’). The text is written in two columns.
Custodial History
Formerly Gaelic MS.XXII. The manuscript is not numbered by Major MacLachlan, not listed in Mackintosh’s catalogue. It is numbered 18 by Hugh Kerr, whose name or initials appear on every leaf.
