Scope and Contents

Manuscript probably written in Iceland, containing a copy of the Jónsbók. It is incomplete at the end.

74 folios, measuring ca. 19 x 16.5 x 19 cm (average size). Written on vellum in a uniform hand in single columns. The first page begins the text with a large decorative initial; further larger initials coloured in red, green and yellow are found on folios 2v, 8r, 13r, 28v, 41r and 53v. Smaller decorative initials in blue and red in a variety of styles can be found throughout. The margins contain a number of drawings of fashionable humans, heads and fantasy creatures.

Custodial History

From the collection of Professor Grímur Jónsson Thorkelin (1752-1829), Copenhagen. Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland

Physical Description

Re-bound by HMSO in a modern blue leather binding with a slipcase by HMSO in 1972-1973. Any remains of the original binding do not seem to have been preserved.

Many of the leaves are darkened, affecting legibility in places.
