Contemporary ink inscription at head of half title: Campbell Edmonstone. Part of the H. Sidney, sale (“Remaining portion of the valuable Library”), Sotheby, 26/5/1903, lot 14 (without the letter), £14/15/- to ‘Hornstein’. Later Provenance of the book and letter: 1: William W. Allis (1849–1918) of Milwaukee, industrial and agricultural machinery manufacturer (Allis-Chalmers Company), sale, Anderson Galleries, New York (25/3/1912, together with the ALS, lot 139, $340) bought by Rosenbach? (pencil notes on rear board “rare in this state”) and sold to: 2: John L. Clawson (1865–1933) of Buffalo, New York, with his leather book label on the front pastedown; in his sale of later English literature at Anderson Galleries, New York, 29/11/1920, lot 46, $365. 3: William Andrews Clark, Jr (1877–1934), of Los Angeles, philanthropist and bibliophile, younger son of the copper baron and senator William Andrews Clark Sr, with his leather label on the front pastedown; not included in his printed catalogue of Modern Books (4 vols., 1920–28); W. A. Clark Jr left his collection of rare books to UCLA which today form the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. 4: Paul Francis Webster (1907–1984), American lyricist, with his leather label on the front pastedown, sale Sotheby, New York, 24/4/1985, lot 7 (unsold; estimate $2000-$3000). 5: Charles J. Sawyer, London bookseller (fl. 1906–90), Catalogue New Series 8/156 (?1989), £5500. 6: Later in a private US collection and recently sold on behalf of the collector’s estate by a dealer in Maine. Bought by the Library from Maggs, September 2021.
