Scope and Contents

Personal papers of Donald Maclean and of his daughter, Hope Maclean. Originally from Lewis, Donald graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1902, and moved to Edinburgh around 1904 where he took up a teaching post at Boroughmuir High School, becoming Headmaster in 1921. Donald married Margaret Macleod, also from Lewis, in 1913. Their eldest child Muriel Hope Duncan Maclean, known as Hope, was born in 1914.

Donald's papers consist of scripts, including one in Gaelic, for talks given by him about life on the Isle of Lewis, and the papers of Hope Maclean relate to her service as an officer in the Women's Royal Naval Service during the Second World War. There is also a file of notes on the history of this branch of the Maclean family in Lewis.
