The transcripts were bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Bought, Sothebys’ 19 May 1947, lot 186.

Existence and Location of Originals

The original letters are known to have been in the possession of the Earl of Elgin in 1879.

Existence and Location of Copies

The Library of the Royal Society possesses another set of transcripts made by David Douglas from the originals about 1864.
