Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence, publications and papers of Dr. Robert D. McIntyre (1913–1998).

The collection contains political papers relating to Robert D. McIntyre’s political career, spanning from the early 1940s to his death in 1998.

The collection contains many political documents (c.1940–c.1994) as well as Robert D. McIntyre’s and the Scottish National Party’s research papers and publications (1706–1994). Contained within miscellaneous research papers and publications, there can be found The Thistle Newsletter (files 68, 1953–1967), Sqian Dubh The Newsletter of the National Movement (file 69, 1968–1976), and contained in Organisations - Contact: The Scottish National Party at Westminster Newsletter (files 88–92, 1976-1982) and papers and publications relating to The Scottish Independent Newspaper (files 97–99, 1927–1987). The collection also contains an interesting array of political campaign materials (files 83–87, 116, 1945–c.1998), which includes flyers, stickers, leaflets and banners, organised by campaign period and date. As well as publications, the collection contains organisational papers of the Scottish National Party, such as minutes, press releases, membership papers and reports (files 106–121, 1706-1997) dating mainly between the mid 1960s and 1990s as well as a Scottish Parliamentary Roll of 1706 and 1707 (published by the Scottish National Party, c.1970’s) found in File 113.

The collection contains pen and pencil notes made by Robert D. McIntyre, himself. These include drafts and research notes for political speeches (13, 28–29, 40-42), notes on policies (files 14–18, 23–26, 30–39), and personal notes on Scottish history and family historical research (files 22, 127–128). The collection also contains Dr. Robert D. McIntyre’s family and personal papers (files 122–134), some concerning Rev. John McIntyre – Robert D. McIntyre’s father (file 133).

No further accruals to this series are expected. Duplicates have been weeded. Collection mainly containing papers in good condition, some partial tearing to documents dated pre 1940, otherwise collection in good condition.

Biographical / Historical

Robert D MacIntyre was President (1958–1980) and Chairman (1948–1956) of the Scottish National Party, and Member of Parliament for Motherwell and Wishaw in 1945. He contested Motherwell, Perth and East Perthshire, West Stirlingshire, Stirling, Falkirk and Grangemouth, and Mid-Scotland and Fife (European Parliament election) for the Scottish National Party between 1950 and 1979. He also served as Provost of Royal Burgh of Stirling (1967–1975) and consultant chest physician in Stirling and Clackmannan (1951–1979) following earlier service as a Medical Officer of Health.

The collection includes a large amount of political correspondence which has been arranged chronologically by date (files 3–12, 1940–1998) and alphabetically (files 1–2, c.1939–1950).

Political papers have also been organised by content relating to Nationalism (files 15–18, 25–26, 37, 60, 72, 120-121) which relates to materials throughout the collection.

The collection has been arranged into three series which reflect Robert D. McIntyre’s political career, involvement with the Scottish National Party and his family and personal papers.
