Scope and Contents

Tom Weir is probably best known for his long-running STV series ‘Weir’s Way’. He was born in Glasgow and served in the Royal Artillery during World War II. He worked as a surveyor for the Ordnance Survey before embarking on the career that was to make him a household name.

Tom Weir is also notable as a mountaineer. He was a member of the first post-war Himalayan expedition and a number of important exploratory expeditions in Nepal in the early 1950s.

He became a pioneering campaigner for the Scottish environment and wrote ‘My Month’ a column for The Scots Magazine for nearly fifty years. He was most influential through Weir’s Way in which, from 1976, he explored Scotland, meeting people and discussing the landscape and Scotland’s natural history.

He was STV ‘Personality of the Year’ in 1978, appointed MBE in 1976, and received a lifetime achievement award from the John Muir Trust for his work in promoting the importance of Scotland’s environment.

Although there is some personal correspondence, the papers mainly consist of diaries, 1932-2000, notebooks, drafts, scripts and related photographs for Tom Weir’s published books, short stories, magazine articles, radio and TV programmes and lectures, on topics of wide-ranging Scottish interest.

As a general rule, the order of material as received within the subject-based series has been retained. Films have been transferred to the Moving Image Archive.
