 Collection
Identifier: Acc.13193

Scope and Contents

Small file of papers, c.1920s-1940s, probably of Isabel N. Fleming, Church of Scotland missionary and teacher at Moukden Medical College, Manchuria, China. The papers are in Mandarin, and include a handwritten note, probably from an unidentified male writer, sending good wishes on hearing that the recipient is to leave the country,. There is also a booklet of the New Testament, a small notebook and printed sheets listing students, and a booklet entitled `Sheng Jing Medical College`, which also appears to include student details.

Isabel N. Fleming first went to Manchuria in 1923, and worked as a science teacher at Moukden Medical College, where she later became the warden of the Women`s Student Hostel. Along with other missionaries, she was forced to leave China in 1942 as the Japanese advanced. After a period in Malawi, Fleming returned to Manchuria in 1947, finally leaving to settle in Edinburgh.
