Scope and Contents

Drawings, 1941-1942, and original Christmas cards, c.1959-1992, by Jacques Laudy (1907-1993).

The Belgian comic artist Jacques Laudy was one of the artists who worked on the early Tintin series with Hergé and others. Laudy was never as well-known as his Tintin contemporaries Hergé and Jacobs, but he worked as a painter and illustrator throughout a long and productive life.

The National Library of Scotland acquired these drawings at auction because they were evidently intended as illustrations for an edition, presumably unpublished, of Kidnapped. Laudy did draw a comic-book version of the novel, published as `David Balfour` (Den Haag, 1980), but the drawings are quite different. A copy of `David Balfour` was bought as part of this lot.
