Scope and Contents

Minutes, correspondence, newsletters and other papers of the Victoria League in Scotland (VL Scotland), 1941-2011.

VL Scotland was founded with the aim of promoting friendship and hospitality for Commonwealth visitors to Scotland, focussing in particular in later years on international students. Originally founded in 1907 as the Edinburgh branch of the Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship based in London, VL Scotland later emerged to act as the governing body for the whole of Scotland.

By the early 21st century, activity in Scotland became concentrated in the Edinburgh office, which finally closed in 2009. VL Scotland continues with similar goals, although with a different mode of operation. The charity aims to advance and develop the welfare and social needs of individuals from overseas countries studying or visiting Scotland on a long-term basis. To do this, grants are offered in support of organisations which provide events or facilities for groups of students or visitors to help them settle in, and to introduce them to Scottish culture.

The papers listed below are in continuation of an earlier accession, Acc.13058.
