Scope and Contents

Papers concerning supplies and men for the army in Scotland addressed to General Bland, c.1747-1748.

Having served under the Duke of Cumberland at the Battle of Culloden, General Bland was made commander-in-chief in Scotland in September 1747, and arrived in his Edinburgh command the following month. During this period, he has been criticized for his rigour in the ‘pacification’ of the Highlands. Bland had obtained in 1743 the sinecure governorship of Fort William, which he held until he was rewarded for his services in Scotland with a similar position at Edinburgh Castle in February 1752.

The papers consist of `Memorial for the Hon[ora]ble Gen[era]l Bland with Regard to the Magazines of Forrage, Flour andc in North Brittain` (ff.1-2); `Charges by Contingent Accounts on the Barracks in North Brittain Viz. Fort Augustus, Barnara, Ruthven and Inversnaite` (ff.3-4); a memorial relating to flour (ff.5-6); and a note `Upon Examining the State of the Invalid Fund...` (f.7). The content includes details of the stores of hay, oats and flour; the numbers of companies attached to the various magazines with the cost of provending them; arrangements for selling off surplus supplies; and proposals for effecting cost-savings. Inter alia, it is noted that all the barracks furniture at Fort Augustus will need to be replaced `it being destroyed by the Rebells`.
