Eighty-four letters and cards of Edwin Morgan to Richard Price; with manuscript of unpublished poem, "The Ropemaker`s Bride".

 Collection
Identifier: Acc.13384

Scope and Contents

The collection records the affectionate last years of a stimulating literary relationship between Edwin Morgan and the younger, ‘Informationist’ poet, Richard Price. They first met in the 1980s when Price, then a Visiting Professor at Strathclyde University, went to visit Morgan. Both technophiles and both love poets, they struck up a lasting friendship, corresponding from then until the mid 2000s. This collection marks the last period of their correspondence, covering 2003-2006 (for earlier letters see Acc.12231), when the frequency of communication increased following Morgan’s terminal illness but which came essentially to a halt in 2006 because of Morgan`s frailty; poignantly there is a solitary signed Christmas card in 2009. The correspondence covers Edwin Morgan’s last works and the period in which he became Scotland’s official Makar. Morgan crams his acute observations on contemporary news as well as retrospective thoughts – on 20th century history, Scottish poetry, on his life in the army, usually into the two pages of a card. The colourful and striking cards usually become a glancing part of the subject of the letter, Morgan improvising and connecting to the picture. Occasionally cuttings are taped in, usually thought-provoking or humorous. Some poems and other works by Morgan are included, with news and discussion of the development of projects such as “Baron Munchausen” and a commission for the BBC on the topic of Morgan’s own cancer. There is also the important late poem “The Ropemaker’s Bride”, which appears in no published collection.
