Papers of Thomas Hannan of Maryhill, relating to his conscientious objection during the First World War, and subsequent imprisonment in Dartmoor.
Scope and Contents
Papers relating to the conscientious objection of Thomas Hannan of Maryhill, Glasgow, 1916-1926. Included are papers relating to his tribunal hearings and subsequent imprisonment, including a letter written from HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs, a letter detailing his removal to Dartmoor prison, programmes relating to concert productions by inmates at Dartmoor, postcards sent from the prison to Hannan’s family, and his military discharge certificate. Particularly poignant are the letters between Hannan and his family, including his father, mother, brothers and wife, which provide a fascinating insight into his views, how they were received by different members of his family, and the emotional impact his stance had on this family during the First World War.
