Papers of David Kennedy-Fraser, psychologist.
Scope and Contents
Letters and photographs, 1916-1921, of David Kennedy-Fraser, psychologist.
Born in Edinburgh in 1888, David Kennedy-Fraser was a student of George Watson`s college before attending Edinburgh University, graduating with a BSc and an MA in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. He studied at the University of Leipzig and at Moray House in Edinburgh before transferring to Cornell University in 1913. During this period, Kennedy-Fraser`s interest in experimental psychology developed and he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at Cornell the following year. During the First World War, Kennedy-Fraser served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery, attached to Intelligence Corps, General Headquarters. Most of the letters and photographs date from this period, and describe Kennedy-Fraser`s experiences of the war, during which time he was at the Front during the Battle of Passchendaele.
After the war, Kennedy-Fraser returned to Scotland, and was appointed as a lecturer in Education at Edinburgh University. In 1923 he transferred to Glasgow, where he was appointed to Glasgow Education Authority as a psychologist, whilst continuing to lecture in psychology at Jordanhill College. Kennedy-Fraser was elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1929, and was closely linked with the Scottish Association for Mental Health into retirement. He was also a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and of the Educational Institute of Scotland.
