"Rambling Thoughts on a Highland Ramble" by L.L. Joseph.

 Item
Identifier: Acc.13706

Scope and Contents

Illustrated journal of a tour in Scotland with watercolours and sketches and pasted in photographs and printed cards. The writer travelled by train from St Pancras, London, to Dumfries, Melrose, Galashiels and Edinburgh. He travelled north over the newly opened Forth Bridge to Pitlochry. From Pitlochry, he visits notable landmarks including the Falls of Bruar and the Pass of Killiekrankie. There is a detailed account of the process of making tweed following a visit to the Pitlochry Tweed factory. From Pitlochry the party travelled by train to Forres.

While in the north, the party stayed at the Cluny Hill Hydropathic which the author compares to a boarding school. A press-cutting from the `Forres Gazette` records their visit noting the amateur dramatics staged by members of the group including Mr Joseph. There are comments on the food and culture including the game of bowls with which they were unfamiliar. A visit to Nairn is described in some detail as is Cawdor Castle.

The party moved on to Inverness, visiting Fort George en route, and travel by steamer on the Caledonian Canal to Fort William where the journal breaks off.

The author is possibly Leonard Lionel Joseph of Kensington (b 1866).
