Except one of Archbishop Leighton, the letters are of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Several are addressed to the Mures of Caldwell; others to Archibald Constable. Some letters to Henry Dundas (Lord Melville), 1783-1807, unconnected with election, possibly indicate that these are part of the Melville papers. The papers consist of minutes of elections, lists of peers and their votes, protests, excerpts from ancient records, proposals as to methods of electing, and other papers.
