Scope and Contents The Ladies Scottish Climbing Club was founded in 1908 by Jane Inglis Clarke, her daughter Mabel Inglis Clark (later Jeffey), and Lucy Smith. All three had climbed extensively in Scotland and the Alps, sometimes in the company of their respective male family members and friends. In 1828 Alexander Turnbull Christie returned to Scotland and studied geology, meteorology, and other branches of science in Edinburgh and on the Continent. In 1830 he was appointed geological surveyor on the Madras establishment, but did not return to India until the following year. He contributed a number of papers to the ‘Edinburgh new philosophical journal’.
