Commonplace book dated 1848, paginated by the scribe 1-732, 781-790, blank after page 727. A leather label pasted onto the front paste-down reads "Donald McKay 1848". The scribe was possibly the Rev. Donald Mackay (1829-1910), a native of Creich, Sutherland, minister of various parishes including Paisley and Nova Scotia. The compendium of medical treatises was written 1611-1614 by Angus Beaton. He gives only his patronymic, Aonghus mac Fearchair mhic Aonghuis (pages 126, 192, 260), but this is sufficient to identify him as of the Beatons of Husabost in Skye.
