Scope and Contents

Colonial Governor Sir Francis Bond Head (1793-1875) wrote a number of books throughout his career, many of which were published by John Murray. Head was a regular contributor to the 'Quarterly Review'. The correspondence within this subseries reflect the relationship between Head and the John Murray publishing house that existed for 50 years. In addition to the letters, there is also a typescript biography of Head written by the historian Sydney Wayne Jackson.

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

They include part of a biography of John MacLean by James Maxton (folio 116), a chapter on the Celtic background of Scottish literature (folio 181), and part of an interview with MacDiarmid by Alexander Scott (folio 227).
