Scope and Contents Eight diary volumes, 1894-1902, of William Kirkwood, merchant mariner. Kirkwood was born in Greenock in 1876, third son of William Kirkwood, a builder. The first diary begins with 17-year old Kirkwood, apprenticed to the `Hiddekel`, setting sail from New York bound for Hong Kong. Kirkwood describes life onboard for a young 2nd mate, including observations on his shipmates, diet and discipline, the weather, marine life, and sightings of land. The papers comprise a scrapbook containing statements of bank accounts and miscellaneous financial records, 1944-1946, concerning his service during WWII; two photographic albums, 1949, of a student debating tour in India with some news cuttings and other papers explaining the purpose of the visit; an auto-biography of Stanley Jenkins, one of McLellan’s fellow students during his Indian journey; Alexander McLellan`s curriculum vitae and obituary.

This extract is taken from a more extensive diary written by James Simson when, on his return to Scotland from India on furlough in 1876, he broke his journey with a visit to Palestine.
