Scope and Contents

The minute-book commences with the original constitution of the 'maisteris, skipperis, marineris, and haill useris of the art of navigatioun within the burgh of Air', laid down on 28 August 1581, with tariffs of 'guidage'. The minutes deal chiefly with the provision of benefits to seamen's widows, etc. Later the society is called the Society of Merchant Adventurers, the Sailors’ Society, and other names.

Scope and Contents

Established on 31 January 1782, for social intercourse and ‘business occasionally intermixed’, the Monthly Club aimed at including noblemen and gentlemen from every county in Scotland. A list of members is given at page 9. The meetings were held in Fortune’s Tavern, Edinburgh. The subjects discussed include the proposed Scottish Poor Law, 1786 (pages 22-24) and the proposed amendments of the Corn Law, 1786-1787 (pages 24, 28-29, 33-37, 40-43).
