Scope and Contents From the Series:

Bessie Kerr, a native of Banff, made her London début as a contralto in 1918, and from then until about 1934 sang regularly for the BBC, for Chappell 'Pop' concerts, and for Promenade concerts. Her correspondence includes letters of Sir Edward German and Frederic King her teacher at the Royal Academy of Music.

Scope and Contents The title is taken from folio i.Despite the date quoted, the first part was begun in January 1857 and completed in February 1866 (page 250) when the index of titles was compiled (folio ii). The second part (page 251) was begun straight afterwards and completed in March 1868, when the index to it was added at the end of the index to the first part (folio iii verso). Content Description A collection of nine notebooks containing songs in English and Gaelic, newspaper cuttings especially on Highland and Gaelic subjects, poetry and notes on a variety of subjects. The collection was preserved by John Tolmie, oldest son of the Rev. John William Tolmie (1831-1886, minister of Bracadale and Contin). Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The Nisbet papers fall into four groups, belonging respectively to the Nisbets of that Ilk, the original owners of the estate; the Kers (later Carres) of Cavers and West Nisbet; who acquired the estate in 1649; the Chisholmes of that Ilk, connected by marriage to Charles St Clair, 15th Lord Sinclair, who succeeded to the estate some time before 1813; and William Molleson, probably related to the sister of Charles St Clair, de jure 13th Lord Sinclair.

The volume is lacking both covers and all after folio 19. It is possible this was originally a number of loose leaves and bifolia which were later stitched together. Folios 18-19 are blank.

The volume is stamped ‘Music’ in gold capitals and inscribed 'N[o] XVII' on the upper cover.

One of the Italian songs is dated 1846 (folio 11 verso) and another 1848 (folio 10 verso). A printed Italian song is tipped in inside the front cover (folio i) and a contents list at folio 1.

Two leaves have been cut out after folio 11.

Music book of George Mills, a member of the choir at Over Wallop, Hampshire, containing the music (in single treble notation) and words of a number of Christmas carols.

Scope and Contents

The music book consists of a number of gatherings of leaves stitched together inside three layers of paper covers. The carols appear to have been copied in a number of children's hands, at different times, the watermarks in the sheets being dated between 1836 and 1846, with some at the end dated 1869. Francis Collinson's note in pencil is at folio 1.

Printed copies of some settings are pasted in at folios 9, 16-24. Folio 28 is a printed sheet containing the words of a song set by him at folio 27. Leaves formerly loosely enclosed are tipped in (folios 89, 92-94) and folios 6, 76-88, 90 are blank.

The music book consists of a number of bifolia and single sheets stitched together to form a volume. An octavo leaf, containing additional words, is tipped in at folio 9.

MSS.21784-21790 are numbered at the front, and the contents of MSS.21784-21785, 21787-21792 are preceded by contents lists, all apparently in the same hand.

From the four dates visible, the collection would appear to have been in the possession of the Misses Douglas about or somewhat before the mid-19th century.
