William Clydesdale was a Glasgow character and a fellow student of Thomas Muir, the political reformer (note inside front cover).

The commonplace book contains satirical, comic, and reflective verses by Clydesdale in Scots and English, some dated 1823, a few anecdotes, and annotations by Peter Mackenzie, author of ‘The life of Thomas Muir’ (Glasgow, 1831).

Scope and Contents From the Series: Sir David Dalrymple, 3rd Baronet of Hailes, (1726-1792), was the son of Sir James Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet of Hailes, and Lady Christian Dalrymple, daughter of the 6th Earl of Haddington. Sir David was educated at Eton and entered the Inner Temple in 1742. From 1747-1748 he studied Civil Law at Utrecht, and in 1748 was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates. The writer set out to follow the route taken by Dr Johnson and to write a similar narrative to his ‘Journey to the Western Islands’. He describes Scotland and its people, noting particularly what is strange to an Englishman, relates his personal experiences, and tells many historical anecdotes and legends, some of which he declares to be new to him. The journal is illustrated with images copied from Adam De Cardonnel’s "Picturesque Antiquities of Scotland".
