The archive of the General Treasurer of the Free Church of Scotland, 1843-1900, with related papers including a few of slightly earlier and later date. The archive gives a complete picture of the financial basis of one of the most significant organised religious bodies in Scotland, from the Disruption to the first of the major Presbyterian reunions, dealing in great detail with the sources of finance and with its expenditure on a variety of projects.

The principal subjects are the settlement of the 2nd Duke's estate; lists of charters to be signed; wadsets; compensation for the abolition of heritable jurisdictions; entail and will of the 3rd Duke; the succession to Archibald Campbell of Inverliver; petitions; and the funeral and biography of the 3rd Duke.

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) papers in the dispute between George Jarron in Crosstown of Aberlemno and Sir Gilbert Elliot (later 1st Earl of Minto), concerning compensation for building a house at Crosstown, 1769, 1788-1790 (folio 1); (ii) Copy of the deed of entail of the lands of Melgund, 1710, with various subsequent papers, 1792-1807, including the Act of Parliament of 1792 permitting the sale of parts of the estate (folio 93).

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Papers, 1748-1763, of and concerning Alexander Hamilton (folio 1). They relate mostly to finance, personal and official (Lord Milton was his creditor), but also to some proposed changes in postal services.

(ii) Papers, 1725-1759, undated, concerning the Hepburns of Humbie, relating chiefly to a dispute between the elder and younger lairds, in which Lord Milton was arbitrator, and the entail of the estate.
