A younger brother of George, 7th Baronet of Cariston, James Seton followed a military career until he sold his commission in 1774. On the death of the 7th Baronet in 1762, he became tutor to his nephew, George, 8th Baronet, and after returning from the army, resided at Cariston for some time. James Seton died at Markinch in 1817.
