Volume containing: (i) a copy of ‘An Index, drawn up about the year 1629, of many records of charters, granted by the different Sovereigns of Scotland between the years 1309 and 1413 ...’ by William Robertson (Edinburgh, 1798); (ii) a copy of ‘Various tracts concerning the Peerage of Scotland’ by James Carmichael (Edinburgh, 1791), 1791, 1798.
(i) contains some amendments (chiefly at pages x-xxv) and notes in an unidentified contemporary hand, and a few notes by John Riddell. (ii) contains marginal notes by John Eiston, whose signature is on the verso of the title page, and a few by Riddell.
Volume containing: (i) a copy of ‘Claim for William Maxwell, Esq., of Carruchan, to be served Heir-Male in general of Robert, the fourth Earl of Nithsdale’ (Edinburgh, 1829), bearing notes in John Riddell`s hand; (ii) a proof-copy of ‘Claim of David Maitland Makgill of Rankeilour to be served heir of line in general to James, First viscount Frendraught’ (1839), containing numerous corrections and other marginal annotation by Riddell; and (iii) an almost unmarked proof-copy of ‘Abstract of the Evidence ... of Robert Preston, Esquire of Lutton, as nearest and lawful heir-male of line to Sir Robert Preston of Valleyfield Baronet ...’ (1835)., 1829, 1835, 1839.

The volume contains George Paton’s signature and bookplate on the verso of the title page of (i), marginalia in another hand on pages 118-119 of (ii), and, on leaves bound in at the back of the volume, copies in his hand of most of Hay’s additions and corrections in his copy of (i) which he gave to Alexander McFarlane on 22 September (not April) 1725.

Volume containing notes on the Law of Scotland taken by John Riddell from lectures given by David Hume, Professor of Scots Law at Edinburgh, afterwards Baron of the Exchequer., 1806-1807.
The notes appear on the rectos of the leaves; most of the versos are blank; those as far as folio 34 verso contain inchoate genealogical notes apparently by Riddell on various Scottish and English families. His incorrect pagination has been ignored. A few leaves at the end of the volume are torn out.
