Scope Note: An area of 'Kaffraria', the Southeast Eastern Cape of South Africa, consisting of the districts now known as King Williams Town and East London, which were annexed by the British as a crown colony. In 1865 the lands were annexed to Cape Colony.

'Kaffraria', meaning ‘the land of the Kaffirs’, from the Arabic 'kāfir' (infidel), is no longer an official designation and ‘kaffir’ is deemed a racial slur.
