Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The founder of the family was Gilbert Elliot (1651-1718), a younger son of Gavin Elliot of Midlem Mill. Gilbert Elliot was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1688, created a baronet in 1700, and appointed a Lord of Session as Lord Minto in 1705; he acquired the lands of Headshaw in Roxburghshire in 1696, and added Minto to his property in 1703. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

Sir George Fletcher, advocate, a younger son of Robert of Innerpeffer, was one of his commissioners and acquired the lands of Restennet in 1627. The first two documents, the earliest in the collection, are the foundation charter of the Priory by Malcolm IV and its confirmation by the Bishop of St Andrews.

William Forbes of Many, afterwards of Craigievar, and his son Sir William, succeeded in acquiring all rights to Saltoun, which was ultimately sold, after being held briefly by Sir William Gray of Pittendrum and various relations of Forbes, to Sir Andrew Fletcher of Innerpeffer.

The papers contain the lawsuit in which the tutors of James George, 7th Duke of Hamilton, contested on his behalf the claim of Archibald James Edward Douglas, son of Lady Jane Douglas Stuart, to the lands of the Douglas family. Andrew Stuart acted as agent for the Hamilton claimant, and played an active part both in France and in Britain in the preparation and presentation of the Hamilton Case.
