Comprised of:
Ch.5946-5975: a group of thirty deeds and notarial extracts formerly part of a larger collection of documents, numbered between 1 and at least 33 (but originally not chronologically arranged), relating to properties in the High Street, Edinburgh;
Ch.5976-5990: a group of mostly unrelated documents of a miscellaneous nature arranged in a separate chronological sequence.

Account book kept by James Traill of Woodwick and his nephew John Traill of Westness, of rents paid by their tenants in the mainland of Orkney and the island of North Ronaldsay.
James Traill`s accounts (folio 1) cover the crop years 1728-1731, and those of his successor, 1746-1747 (folio 128). There is also an inventory of goods belonging to James Traill left in North Ronaldsay (folio 175).

Additional inventory for an eik to the confirmation of executors to the estate of James Guthrie, merchant in Dundee., 1707.
As well as charters relating to the Chalmers family itself, there are other items which are apparently unrelated but which came with the bulk of the papers. Only one document (Ch.12806) is of 15th century date, and only one (Ch.12776) is of the 16th century. The rest of the collection dates largely from the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of the correspondence is addressed to James Law, Writer to the Signet, who acted as London agent in many Peerage Cases in which Riddell was involved; and much of it is from other lawyers.
