Scope and Contents The trial was held in the Cathedral church of Ross in Fortrose on 27th November 1577, by Walter Urquhart sheriff of Cromarty and Robert Munro of Foullis. The document appears to be the earliest surviving example of a local witchcraft trial held under a royal commission.Katherine Ross was later tried and acquitted in 1590 for her part in the attempted murder of the young lady and laird and the actual murder of the nurse who accidentally tasted the poison. Two contiguous vellum fragments of what appears to be an English legal document, possibly an inventory, to which several corrections have been made., ?Late 16th century.

Scope and Contents

Together the fragments form a fragment of approximately 3 x 7 inches. They had been used as binding strips in a copy (pressmark DD.2/1.11) of ‘S.P.N. Eustathii … in Hexahemeron commentarius (etc.)’ (Lugduni, 1629), by Saint Eustathius, Bishop of Antioch.

Dates: ?Late 16th century.

In both volumes each page has been ruled in three columns, each column headed by three letters in an alphabetical sequence. The purpose for which this was intended has not been carried out and the volumes have been adapted for other uses.

The larger of the fragments is apparently signed J Osborne at Westminster, 12 February 1563, and refers to one John Jeffery.

The fragments had been used as a binding strip in a copy (pressmark FF.1/2.14) of ‘Petri Canisii Societatis Jesu opus catechisticum’, (Lutetiæ Parisiorum, 1618), by Saint Peter [Canisius].

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

Andrew Stuart was a noted lawyer and politician. As lawyer he acted as agent for some important Scottish noble families, in particular the Dukes of Hamilton; as politician he represented Lanarkshire in Parliament, and was a member of the Board of Trade in Lord North's administration. The papers here are almost entirely of a legal and personal nature.
