Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Sir Alexander Burnes was a British political officer in India and an explorer. He travelled in India, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. He was assassinated on a mission to Kabul in 1841.Burnes wrote 'Travels into Bokhara', which was published by John Murray in 1834 and sold 900 copies on the first day of publication. Scope and Contents

The script is Caroline minuscule, with headings in rustic capitals, and also square capitals on a display page, folio 80 verso (beginning of book xi). Written by several hands in a French scriptorium north of the Loire in the second half of the 9th century. There are a few later marginal notes. On the lower side of the front pastedown is French writing in a 16th-century cursive hand.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The Nisbet papers fall into four groups, belonging respectively to the Nisbets of that Ilk, the original owners of the estate; the Kers (later Carres) of Cavers and West Nisbet; who acquired the estate in 1649; the Chisholmes of that Ilk, connected by marriage to Charles St Clair, 15th Lord Sinclair, who succeeded to the estate some time before 1813; and William Molleson, probably related to the sister of Charles St Clair, de jure 13th Lord Sinclair.

Scope and Contents

The notebooks serve more as an assortment of information - notes, press cuttings and documentary evidence, such as copies of wills - to be used in the preparation of the specific entries of the dictionary, than as a considered manuscript. In many cases only the heading of the name of the poet has been entered.

None of the volumes has an index.
