Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

With the exception of MS.8455, these volumes of printed correspondence were prepared by James Stuart in answer to the accusations raised against him. The contents duplicate to a large extent letters recorded elsewhere in the catalogue. The majority of the volumes contain manuscript indexes and abstracts, and manuscript marginal notes.

Journal of a tour in Switzerland and Italy, written by M Rayner, pupil of a boys' school., 1856.

Scope and Contents

M Rayner was apparently a boy in the second of the three school parties, and the style of English and peculiarities of punctuation suggest that he was French or Swiss. The tour begins and ends at Bellerive. The journal is illustrated by a coloured plate showing the Great Seal of the Swiss Confederation and the cloaks worn by the officials of the different cantons (folio ii), by numerous postcards, and by a printed plan of the Alps (folio 49).

Scope and Contents

Journal of Charles Stuart's tour through Lower Saxony and Upper Saxony, Bavaria and Austria. Places visited include Aixhaven, Halberstadt, Leipzig, Bamberg, Ratisbon, Gottingen and Gotha. With 'A New Map of the Emperor's Dominions exhibiting the Post Roads of Germany, Hungary and the Netherlands with those of the adjacent parts of France, Switzerland, Italy and Poland, 1796, annotated with the routes of Lord Stuart's journeys pasted in.
