A contract entered into ante or post-nuptially between persons about to be or actually married, for the purpose of regulating the rights in property of themsleves and their children. As well as charters relating to the Chalmers family itself, there are other items which are apparently unrelated but which came with the bulk of the papers. Only one document (Ch.12806) is of 15th century date, and only one (Ch.12776) is of the 16th century. The rest of the collection dates largely from the 17th and 18th centuries. A detailed list is available.

The 17th century documents relate to members of the Fordyce family, in Auchencrieff; most of those of the 18th century concern persons dwelling in Banff and its neighbourhood; and most of those of the 19th century are accounts of the Banff Town Council.

Included are charters of Deer Abbey which passed to the family on the Reformation as the lordship of Altrie. Notes on these charters appear in Patrick Keith Murray`s `Inventory of Marischal Papers, 1905`, MS.21114.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Correspondence and papers of the family of Cameron of Fassiefern, collected and preserved by Brodrick Haldane Esq, Edinburgh.

The letters are mostly to members of the Fassiefern family, especially to John Cameron of Fassiefern and his son Sir Ewen, 1st Baronet. Also containing some legal documents and business papers. There are also papers pertaining to the Cameron chiefs Sir Ewen and Donald Locheil.
