Scope and Contents From the Series:

The Saint George Quartet Club was founded in 1874 to encourage the performance and appreciation of chamber music, principally for strings. The Club had a large repertoire and seems generally to have kept abreast of developments in music until at least the First World War. Around 1938 it was taken over by the Edinburgh Society of Musicians.

Scope and Contents The correspondence is preceded by a copy, 1876 (watermark), of the Minutes of Kirkcaldy Town Council, 1815-1816, relating to the appointment of Thomas Carlyle as schoolmaster there, and a printed notice, 1816, of Smith and Johnstone's school at Ecclefechan. Mrs Carlyle's letters, 1821-1826 and undated, include several written to Carlyle before their marriage. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The correspondence deals in large part with surveys, leases, and other business relating to estates in Morayshire and elsewhere in Scotland. Sir George Brown's letters refer to regimental matters and to general affairs in the places where he is stationed - London, various Mediterranean stations, 1822-1836, Ireland, 1825, 1837, and the Crimea, 1854. Scope and Contents

Alexander Walker became a member of the Malabar Commission in 1800 with a particular responsibility for investigating unrest among the Mapilla chieftains in the Southern District. This led to an extensive correspondence with George Waddell, Southern Superintendent, and with John Spencer, President of the Commission.

With the exception of MS.8455, these volumes of printed correspondence were prepared by James Stuart in answer to the accusations raised against him. The contents duplicate to a large extent letters recorded elsewhere in the catalogue. The majority of the volumes contain manuscript indexes and abstracts, and manuscript marginal notes.
