In November 1942, George Campbell Hay went to North Africa with the Ordnance Corps. During his service there he learnt French, Arabic and Italian. By 1945 he was in Italy, and in the autumn of that year he was transferred to the Education Corps and posted to Greece before being sent home in 1946. His notebooks contain poetic, linguistic and political material in several languages.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. The title was created in 1633 for Alexander Forbes (d.1636).
