Manuscripts, typescripts and proofs of poetry and prose works, including books, articles, lectures and notes. Much of the material is fragmentary, and some was reworked or copied by Hugh MacDiarmid at a later date.

While some of these are complete and take the form in which they were submitted to publishers, many are merely brief notes of ideas for books, and possibly for material to be used in talks and articles.
Two articles on Charles Napier, with an article on William Napier, all by Whitwell Elwin and each extracted from the "Quarterly Review". The pages have been revised by Elwin., ? 1857-? 1864.
The manuscripts, proofs and notebooks here reflect the interests and writing of Whitwell Elwin. There are items relating to Alexander Pope, William and Charles Napier, James Boswall and Samuel Johnson, and William Cowper among others. Many of these items relate to the work of Whitwell for the 'Quarterly Review' and his other published works, including 'Some XVIII century men of letters'.
