Scope Note: General term for copies produced by photocopying, that is, in a machine employing a light-sensitive process, and usually at a one-to-one scale. In the early to mid-20th century, used regarding copies made by various specific processes; since the mid-20th century, most often refers to xerographic copies.

Scope and Contents David Young, writing master in Edinburgh, and subsequently master of the grammar school in Haddington, is known to have made two other later compilations of Scottish tunes: the Young manuscript, [circa 1740], in the Bodleian Library (MS.Don.d.54), and the MacFarlane manuscripts, 1743, in the National Library of Scotland (MSS.2084-2085).The volume is remarkable for the quantity of material it contains (48 country dances, and 45 reels), for the descriptions of how the country...

The alphabetical list of members of the Society (including many women), gives details of the number of looms possessed by each weaver; each weaver was assessed ½ per year on each loom for the purpose of new ravels, and the repair of old ones. In 1872 the Society merged with the similar local Beaming Machine Society.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

This collection dates mainly from after 1988, when John McGrath and Elizabeth MacLennan resigned from the company which they had established, with David MacLennan, in 1973. Following the funding crisis in 2006, the company had to leave its base in the STUC building in Glasgow, and it was at this point that much of the material in this accession was presented to the National Library of Scotland.
