The poems are written in two different hands and at the rear of the volume there are several pages written in cypher or shorthand.

Scope and Contents

Some of the poems were copied at Dundee, Glasgow, London and Brechin Castle, and the volume appears to have belonged to members of the Robertson family of Dundee. There are pencilled notes on the different branches of the family inside the front cover.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

MSS.7443-7445 are written in German, having been delivered on George Combe's tour in Germany in 1842.

The phrenological reports (MSS.7452-7455) comprise the phrenological measurements of many persons, both well-known and obscure, with reports and descriptions of their mental capabilities and weaknesses.

The papers of Cecilia Combe contain a selection of literary efforts, diaries of tours, and the usual memoranda and inventories kept by nineteenth-century housewives.

Dates: 1852.

The majority of the poems are anonymous but there are two by Allan Ramsay, one by Jonathan Swift, and one attributed to Colley Cibber. Several of the other poems have been printed and some appear in ‘First Line Index of English Poetry’. A list of these poems is inserted at the beginning of the volume.

Apart from the poems there are several pages written in a cypher and folios 71-73 contain dressmaking accounts, dated 1722-1729, in a different hand.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Born in Aberdeenshire, Charles Murray went to South Africa in 1888, where he rose to be Deputy-Inspector of Mines for the Transvaal (1901) and Secretary for Public Works in the Union of South Africa (1910). He never lost touch with Scotland, and many of his poems are in the dialect of the north east.

The contents are as follows. (i) Part of a manuscript collection of poems intended for publication, circa l940 (folio 1); (ii) Incomplete manuscript and typescripts of the second and third appendices to a larger work. The 'Second Appendix' (folio 21) consists of a poem on Glasgow, parts of which were published in ‘Collected poems’ and ‘Lucky poet’. The "Third Appendix' (folio 52) is 'Once in a Cornish garden' from ‘A lap of honour’ (London, 1967).

Scope and Contents The manuscript, watermarked 1827, was written by Peter Rose who lived circa 1764-1841, a cadet of a family which had a lease of Ardachy, Abertarff, 1726-1770. He spent his working life in the West Indies, retiring to Scotland 1824 or 1825. A cloth label on the inside front cover is inscribed ‘P. The book contains verses, historical and literary material, notes of events in Roslin, 1869-1873, and fragments of a diary for 1895-1896. A later hand has added copies of poems and of the will, May 1927, of John Glover who died in 1933 (folio 96).
