Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. The title was created in 1633 for Alexander Forbes (d.1636). His descendant Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Forbes of Pitsligo (1678-1762) forfeited his estates following his support for the Jacobites in...

He served in the Boer and First World Wars, retiring from the army in 1919 as honorary Staff Captain. As a member of the Royal Academy he specialised in portraits and subjects of a religious genre, his best-known work being...

Scope and Contents

The sketches, which are in pencil except for a few in watercolour or crayon, are mostly of architectural details and ornament, chiefly from churches. There are some sketches of buildings in Scotland (MSS.10658-10659), Northern France (MS.10661) and the English cathedral cities. There are also drawings of mediaeval musical instruments (MS.10662), armour (MS.10663) and objects from museums, especially metalwork and jewellery (MS.10665).
