Transcripts are extremely accurate copies with any editorial explanations or notations clearly distinguished from the original, including indications of misspellings or editorial omissions. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

These letters are mostly copies, many of them in the autograph of the person to whom the letter was written and others (chiefly in MS.854) in the hand of Sophia Lockhart, and were apparently in the main sent to John Gibson Lockhart for use when he was writing his ‘Life of Scott’. Some are accompanied by letters or biographical notes by the transcriber.

Henderson's particular interest was in music for the Scottish fiddle, and in addition to extensive work on the older sources of such music, he was an authority on the compositions of his contemporaries, who seem frequently to have sought his advice. Scope and Contents These thick manuscript volumes were written by three clerks (James Connell, Evander McLeod and another) under the supervision of the Reverend Dr John MacLeod of Dundonald. They were part of the final draft of the Highland Society of Scotland Dictionary, and were transcribed between June 1822 and June 1823 from materials prepared by MacLeod and Ewen MacLachlan (see below). Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Papers of the Willison family, who farmed in both Lanarkshire and Perthshire, covering personal and business matters. The collection includes a detailed family history and genealogy composed by Ralph Willison Simmonds (Edinburgh 1989), detailed transcripts and a booklet with historical notes: The Willisons of South Lanarkshire (Edinburgh, 1994), also by Mr Willison - see Acc.11049/1 and Acc.11049/76.

Scope and Contents

The first letter, 1477, is also countersigned by William Schevez, Archbishop of St Andrews, to the sheriff of Edinburgh, ordering him to proclaim that no remissions for murder will in future be granted (folio 3); the second letter, 1479, is to John Haldane of Gleneagles, sheriff of Edinburgh, ordering him to apprehend certain murderers, and endorsed by Haldane as executed (folio 6). With the former letter is a nineteenth-century transcript.
