Scottish Craft Centre

 Organization

Biography

The Scottish Craft Centre was established in 1949 by craftsmen to preserve, develop and display fine workmanship and design in Scotland. Also formed in 1949 was the Workshops and Studios Foundation which sought to assist craftsmen in obtaining working premises. In 1951 the Foundation merged with the Centre.

Based in Acheson House in Edinburgh, craftsmen members, elected by a Panel of Assessors, were able to exhibit and sell their work ranging from textiles and ceramics to jewellery, silverware and woodwork. In addition, the Centre also acted as a clearing house for craft enquiries and commissions and organised craft exhibitions throughout Scotland. From 1974-1990 the Centre received funding from the Scottish Development Agency (Craft Division).

For further information on the early years of the Centre see 'The First Five Years: The Scottish Craft Centre in the Canongate, Edinburgh', (Edinburgh, 1955).
