Biography

This firm of auctioneers and valuers was established in 1830 by James Dowell, who extended his business as an upholsterer in East Thistle Street Lane to include the occupations of auctioneer and appraiser. The company, which has been in continuous existence since that date was later, as Phillips in Scotland, a constituent of the Phillip's international auctioneering group.
