Biography

Dr Robert Douglas McIntyre MB, ChB, DPH, DUniv, JP, physician and leader of the Scottish National Party. Dr McIntyre was Scottish National Party MP for Motherwell and Wishaw, 1945, Chairman of the SNP, 1948-1956, and President, 1958-1980. He contested Motherwell, Perth and East Perthshire, West Stirlingshire, Stirling, Falkirk and Grangemouth, and Mid-Scotland and Fife [European Parliament election] for the SNP between 1950 and 1979, and was Provost of Stirling, 1967-1975, and a Consultant Chest Physician in Stirling and Clackmannan, 1951-1979, following earlier service as a Medical Officer of Health.

Some family and other papers of Robert Douglas McIntyre's father, the Reverend John Ebenezer McIntyre (1874-1961), successively minister of Hightae and Dalton, Motherwell, Manse Road, and St Mary's, Edinburgh, United Free churches, and later of Barony and St James Place Church of Scotland, Edinburgh, precede the main collection.
